The mission of the Hope College Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC) is to provide all Hope College students with an equal opportunity to become adventurers. We aspire to inspire and cultivate a love for the outdoors within our campus community. We strive to provide opportunities for students to explore and appreciate nature through a variety of outdoor activities and gatherings. By fostering an inclusive and supportive community, we aim to promote personal growth, environmental stewardship, and a lifelong passion for outdoor adventures. Join us as we create lasting memories, build strong connections, and develop valuable skills that will empower you to enjoy the great outdoors responsibly and confidently.
While the year of the OAC’s creation has been lost to history, we speculate that a passionate group students who shared a love for the outdoors felt a desire to share the spirit of adventure and exploration with their community.
Over the years, the OAC has expanded its activities to include not only backpacking and camping but also rock climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, and more. Each semester, the club organizes a variety of trips and events, ranging from local day hikes to multi-day expeditions in national parks.
The club offers students a chance to disconnect from the daily grind of college and reconnect with nature and their community. Through its activities, the OAC fosters a sense of curiosity and adventure, encouraging members to push their limits, learn new skills, and develop a deeper appreciation for God's creation.
A significant milestone in the club's history was the introduction of gear rentals for Hope College students in 2015. This initiative made outdoor adventures more accessible by providing essential equipment such as tents, backpacks, and sleeping bags. By removing the barrier of gear availability, the OAC opened up opportunities for all students to participate in and enjoy outdoor activities.
The exec board values and welcomes ideas from all members, believing that the best adventures come from collaborative efforts and diverse perspectives. Whether it's a suggestion for a new destination, an unexplored activity, or a different approach to a classic event, the OAC thrives on the creativity and enthusiasm of its members.
